our ideology

How we work matters as much as what we make. These are the things we hold to, and the way a project runs with us.

woman-owned since 2022

A.K.A is a woman-owned horticultural design studio, working across New York City since 2022. We design, build, and install out of the Williamsburg studio. We hold our clients for years, not projects.

organic and sustainable practice

Our horticultural and floral work follows organic and sustainable practices. We are a foam-free studio: floral foam is a material that does not break down, so we build without it. In most of our maintenance programs we manage pests with beneficial insects rather than chemical treatments.

seasonal by the week

We shop the flower market each week and build from what is genuinely in season. It is why no two weeks look quite the same, and why the work stays close to whatever is growing now.

nothing goes to waste

Event florals and plants are always composted or re-homed at the end of their life. We donate them to community institutions, local businesses, and parks rather than sending anything to landfill.

community and education

We are a relationship-based studio. We collaborate closely with the designers, operators, and in-house teams we work alongside, and we teach as we go, so the people who share a space with these plants know how to keep them well. Our clients matter to us, and the care we give them is the part of this work we are proudest of.

our process

a growing
relationship

From the first idea to the everyday tending, we’re here for the life of your space.

A layered city garden of hydrangeas, flowering perennials, and sculptural foliage

First, we see
the possibility.

It starts with a walkthrough of your space. We explore the light, the setting, and what you have in mind, then bring the idea into focus with a moodboard or design sketches.

Together, we define the scope and creative elements. You receive an initial quote and project timeline, with a deposit to get things growing.

  1. walkthrough
  2. concept
  3. proposal

Then, we
bring it to life.

Our Horticultural Design Team brings every part of the design into your space, placing each plant and finishing each detail with care.

We handle the installation and protect the space as we work, so all that’s left behind is a place that feels a little more alive.

  1. deliver
  2. install
  3. review

And keep
it growing.

A living space keeps changing. We create a care plan and visit schedule around yours, keeping your plants healthy and your design growing beautifully.

From watering and pruning to repotting and pest care, we do the tending—and share what we know along the way. Plant replacements are included where appropriate.

  1. educate
  2. maintain
  3. grow together

about a.k.a

Atafeh Karimi founded A.K.A in 2022, with our studio located in Williamsburg. Our team of horticultural designers and florists work between hotels, workplaces, restaurants, and private residences. We are a small and dedicated team who feel that a connection to nature is integral to a happy and productive environment.

Our ethos is to bring nature, horticultural education, and Biophilic Design to the spaces, people, and companies that make up New York City. We care about the plants long after they are installed, and about the people who live and work alongside them.

We so appreciate you being a part of our mission and supporting our growing team of Horticultural Designers.
